Lady in Red Hydrangea; Lush, Rich & Distinctive

Hydrangeas have always been a focal point of classical gardens. Their flowering grandeur in late spring announces that the lazy days of summer are upon us. But what if they could show color three seasons out of the year? Now you can, with the new ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea that provides stunning red color interest from spring into autumn.

‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea is an exciting new hydrangea that will add beauty and style to any garden. Spring begins with leaf emergence of distinctive red stemmed and veined dark green leaves, flowers bloom in late spring to summer with pinkish-white/bluish-white lacecaps (depending on soil pH) that mature to lush burgundy rose. Autumn is full of rich reddish-purple foliage as cooler temperatures arrive.

The ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea blooms are delicate lacecaps, 4-5 inches across. As bloom sepals mature, they reverse with the back-sides visible and gracefully age to burgundy-rose. ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea also has a compact, mounded growth habit, very high mildew resistance, and sturdy stems, which make it a wonderful addition to any shade area, adding color interest to perennial borders, groupings or mass plantings. The vibrant autumn color makes it a great container plant for the fall. Best if used in part shade, this hydrangea will add three seasons of distinction to any garden.

‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea will be available as a pre-release in limited quantities, through mail order and at fine garden centers, throughout the Southeast in the fall of 2004. This new hydrangea will officially debut in garden centers everywhere beginning in the spring of 2005.
