Lady in Red Hydrangea Press Release
Spring 2005

Lush, Rich & Distinctive ~ Lady in Red Hydrangea
McCorkle Nurseries introduces a new red beauty to the hydrangea family.

Dearing, GA - McCorkle Nurseries, one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the Southeast, in partnership with the University of Georgia Research Foundation, introduces a Hydrangea macrophylla that provides interest from spring into autumn. Developed by Dr. Michael A. Dirr at the Department of Horticulture, University of Georgia, this breakthrough hydrangea is an open pollinated seedling of ‘Otaksa’.
The ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea is an exciting new hydrangea that will add beauty and style to any garden. Spring begins with leaf emergence of distinctive red stemmed and veined dark green leaves, flowers bloom in late spring to summer with pinkish-white/bluish-white lacecaps (depending on soil pH) that mature to lush burgundy rose. Autumn is full of rich reddish-purple foliage as cooler temperatures arrive.
The ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea blooms are delicate lacecaps, 4-5 inches across. As bloom sepals mature, they reverse with the back-sides visible and gracefully age to burgundy-rose. ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea also has a compact, mounded growth habit, very high mildew resistance, and sturdy stems, which make it a wonderful addition to any shade area, adding color interest to perennial borders, groupings or mass plantings. The vibrant autumn color makes it a great container plant for the fall. Best if used in part shade, this hydrangea will add three seasons of distinction to any garden.
‘Lady in Red’ hydrangea is being offered through a national grower network and debuts at retail stores nationally this spring in Independent Garden Centers and at The Home Depot® home stores.
